Hand Forged Metalwork
By Giles Flowitt-Hill
Rings hand forged from solid bronze
The original rings were made with a riveted silver pin as part of a collaboration with Kia crafts in New Zealand. Since then, I have developed the technique used to make the rings,, first trying soft solder, then brazing techniques, and welding.
The aim is to produce a set of rings that is simultaneously: aesthetically pleasing, strong, and made from materials that will not corrode and damage wraps.
Journeys in new materials
As I made more rings for people, I was sent requests for new and interesting materials. For a metalworker, new materials come with new challenges, as each behaves differently when heated and worked, and so significant work needs to be done to ensure the quality of a piece in a new material.
Other Commissions
Alongside my baby wearing rings, I am also occasionally asked to make other items, and this is a nice opportunity for a little variety.
